PROGRAM

Programs at Healing Farm Jigeum are designed around the farm’s natural environment and its agricultural and rural resources, creating opportunities for the body and senses to reconnect with the surrounding environment and remain present in the experience of the moment. Elements such as landscape, sound, scent, taste, and touch are combined with the farm’s sensory, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and relational resources, allowing participants to see, listen, touch, walk, harvest, and taste as part of one continuous experience.

The programs are grounded in the Gestalt concept of the here and now and in occupational therapy–based cognitive intervention models. By encouraging awareness of present sensations and emotions, bodily movement, and the surrounding environment, the programs integrate cognitive stimulation, cognitive training, and cognitive rehabilitation into hands-on activities. Their aims include stimulating cognitive functions such as memory, attention, language, and orientation; supporting physical activity and balance through low-intensity walking and agricultural tasks; and encouraging emotional stability and social connection through interactions with nature and with others.

Healing Farm Jigeum’s representative program, From My Hometown: Harvest Journey and Culinary Exploration, is a multi-session program that connects Korea’s 24 seasonal divisions with changes in nature and participants’ episodic memories. Following seasonal transitions—from springtime Gogu to the harvests of summer and autumn—participants walk through the farm, encounter seasonal plants and crops, and draw on past experiences and memories through harvesting, cooking, tasting, and conversation. The program consists of eight sessions, each lasting approximately 120 minutes, and takes place across the indoor learning space, outdoor learning areas, aquatic ecology learning area, and the farm’s six walking paths.

Each session begins with walking through the farm. Along the six paths—Supgil-ro, Gaeul-ro, Dumbeong-ro, Gwasu-ro, Sikmul-ro, and Kkotgil-ro—participants complete approximately 1,200 to 1,500 steps of low-intensity walking while encountering the birch grove and birdsong, the sound of flowing water, the pond and aquatic life, blossoms and fruit in the orchard, and vegetables and soil in the garden. Walking is approached not simply as movement from one place to another, but as an activity that engages visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, and proprioceptive senses, allowing participants to become gradually aware of changes in both their bodies and the surrounding environment.

The Harvest Journey draws on seasonal plants and crops found throughout the farm, from spring greens such as mugwort, shepherd’s purse, water parsley, and chives to strawberries, silverberries, Korean cherries, grapes, blueberries, and other seasonal produce. Participants observe the names and characteristics of plants, touch and smell them, and use appropriate tools to collect and harvest them directly. These activities naturally encourage hand and body movement while also linking physical experience with cognitive activities such as recognizing, remembering, and recalling plant names and characteristics.

Harvesting then leads into Culinary Exploration. Participants clean and prepare what they have gathered, organize ingredients, and take part in the cooking process through a series of movements connected to everyday life. Once the food is prepared, participants taste it together and share memories associated with childhood, seasonal foods, and their hometowns. The program draws on the Proust phenomenon—the experience of a particular scent or taste evoking memories from the past—to create a natural connection between sensory experience and episodic memory.

Other activities include planting and tending individual garden plots, working with flowers and herbs, building birdhouses, observing aquatic ecosystems, music and rhythmic movement, orientation worksheets, and recalling and writing plant names. Depending on the weather, season, and participants’ physical conditions, activities move flexibly between indoor and outdoor spaces. Time is also set aside at the beginning and end of each session to notice changes in the body, emotions, and the experience of the present moment.

Programs for older adults in particular are designed for participants who may require support across physical, cognitive, psychological, emotional, and social domains. Key goals include stimulating memory, orientation, language, and attention; maintaining mobility and balance through walking and agricultural activities; supporting emotional stability through engagement with plants and natural environments; and encouraging social connection through shared experiences. Participant safety and individual condition are considered throughout the program, with support staff involved when needed and physical, cognitive, and psychological assessments incorporated where appropriate.

At Healing Farm Jigeum, a program is not defined by any single activity. Walking through the farm, observing the seasons, touching soil and plants, harvesting, preparing food, and sharing stories all form part of one continuous experience. Rather than treating nature as a passive backdrop, the programs create an environment in which people and nature, body and senses, memory and the present can come into relationship with one another. Within that environment, each participant is invited to encounter the here and now at their own pace.
